The Storyline
"The Italian Job" is a classic film. If you asked people to name a film with Minis in it, 99% of your replies would be "The Italian Job".
"The Italian Job" tells the story of a four million dollar Gold Bullion raid in Italy by a bunch of cockney thieves.
The Main Character, Charlie Croker, is played by Michael Caine. After being released from jail, he begins to plan the biggest robbery in history using a plan given to him by his deceased friend, Roger Beckerman, who is killed by the mafia at the beginning of the film in a tunnel in his Lamborghini Miura.
However, Charlie doesn't have the funds to pull this plan off, so breaks back into jail to speak to Mr. Bridger, the boss of the criminal underworld. Mr. Bridger is not impressed, so orders "Camp" Freddie to give Croker a going over. Shortly after the beating has finished, "Camp" Freddie receives a call from Mr. Bridger, who has just seen that the chinese are giving the Italians four million dollers in Gold Bullion, and he tells "Camp" Freddie that he is backing Croker.
Croker then starts the real planning. Croker assembles a team of fellow crooks, but also realises that he needs some brains behind the operation. Cue Professor Peach, Benny Hill, a Computer genius who is in a home after lusting after the rather large and plain maid in his mothers house.
During the training various Minis are smashed to pieces and whilst attempting to blow open the doors on a van, the whole van blows up, and the legendary line is spoken "You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"
When they go to Italy they encounter the Mafia who destroy all three of their back-up cars, 2 Jaguar E-types and an Aston Martin DB4 convertible. When they all arrive in Turin, they use a disused Villa to plan the final details of the raid.
In order to pull this off, they create a huge traffic jam by placing a new program on the traffic computer. Once this is done, they shuld be able to take the gold and leave by their own unique route, and escape to Switzerland. However, the plan doesn't exactly go smoothly.
They ambush the Gold Bullion convoy with a Land Rover and two car transporters, and drag it into an empty building, where the gold is transferred in a hurry into three Mk1 Mini Cooper S's (Red, white & blue). During this time the doors are being rammed by the car transporters used in the raid, having being captured & directed by the police.
The Cooper S's get away just in time, and their epic journey begins. The Minis avoid the roads due to the traffic, and drive through a Shopping Piazza, down a subway, through many paths, down the steps of a local church, up the roof of an aircraft Museum (where the Italian Police are embarrased even further), on the Fiat test track, jump over roofs, through a weir and then down through the sewers. The Minis manage to lose the police, finally board a Coach, driven by "Big William", and escape. The Minis are then sent to their death over the alps. The crooks celebrate with booze, but in the excitement of it all, "Big William" takes a corner too fast and ends up with the bus dangling half way over the edge, with only the Gold dragging them down. Caine finishes the film with the immortal line : "Hang on a minute lads, I've got an Idea"
